Στις παλιές οθόνες CRT και στις οθόνες TFT πρώτης γενιάς ήταν απαραίτητο το screensaver για να μην δημιουργούνται μόνιμες σκιάσεις όταν η οθόνη έμενε σε μεγάλα διαστήματα χωρίς χρήση... Ειδικά όταν χρησιμοποιούσε κάποιος τα ίδια προγράμματα σε καθημερινή βάση και άφηνε την οθόνη για μεγάλα διαστήματα χωρίς χρήση, το φαινόμενο της σκίασης ήταν πιο έντονο... Μια επεξήγηση του φαινομένου σκίασης είναι παρακάτω:
Στις σύγχρονες οθόνες TFT δεν χρειάζεται πλέον το screensaver παρά μόνο για λόγους εξοικονόμησης ενέργειας χρησιμοποιώντας ως screensaver την επιλογή "blank":

Due to the high energy of some of the radiation emitted from CRTs, if they are left displaying the same image for long periods of time, they can "burn" the image into the glass of the display, leaving a (permanent) ghostly afterimage. For this reason, we have screensavers, which display various moving images on your screen after you're left it alone for a few minutes. Since the images are always moving, screen burn is avoided.
