Dear Sotiris
Congratulations on becoming the ‘UbuntuVoice’. We are excited that you are joining us.
At the moment we are busy working on writing reports from previous research and planning the coming research, so we may be a bit quiet for a while, but we will get in touch with you in the near future.
In the previous several months, we have conducted much user research on the Ubuntu phone. Some of the highlights of our research are:
The phone was considered to be innovative by the participants, but at the same time, these innovative features challenged their typical way of interacting with the phone, and caused some difficulties in the initial use. Acting upon the feedback, designers have been busy working on solutions for balancing between innovation and usability, for example:
The magic edges add playfulness to the phone. However, many participants struggled to unlock the screen.
We now introduce an interactive edge-gesture demo for the first use of the phone. The demo covers the right edge, left edge, and the top edge (which includes opening and closing the indicator/setting area).
Our first version of the telephony app combines ‘phone’, ‘message’ and ‘contact’. The design promotes communication centered around a person. However, participants are used to think about categories of communications, text as oppose to a call, or a contact book. As a result, they were looking for phone, message and contact app specifically.
Now we have divided the app into 3 different apps, emphasising the type of communication categories rather than the person.
The navigation between different indicators/settings requires a level of gestural precision and control which was difficult for the participants. They tended to lose their place and open something they didn’t want.
This gestural navigation remains for advanced users. However, we added tabs to allow users to move between indicator/setting options when a window is pulled down.
Designers are continuing to work on solutions for other issues, for example, ways to better hint the hidden bottom menu, and the interaction and use of the right edge.
What will happen next?
We will email you when we conduct research that needs your feedback, from which you will get details of the research and instructions for participating in the study.
In addition, we will keep you updated. We will only do this every two months, so that you won’t feel that we email you too much!
In the meantime, if you have questions, please feel free to email us at ubuntuvoice@gmail.com
With best regards,
