Education conference to present results of school GNU/Linux pilots
The results of GNU/Linux pilot projects in about a thousand Russian schools will be a major topic at the fourth conference on open source software in higher education, taking place in the central-Russian city of Pereslavl-Zalessky on 30 January and 1 February.

Over a thousand schools in the Republic of Tartarstan, the region of Perm and the province of Tomsk this year took part in a pilot project with the aim of deploying a government-sponsored GNU/Linux distribution dubbed "Free Software Package". The developer, the Armada group, in 2009 will make a bug-fixed, updated and refined version available to all Russian schools. More than 60.000 schools are expected to deploy it next year. The Russian government has reserved a budget of 650 million roubles (about 18 million euro) for the migration.

The results of the GNU/Linux pilots will be presented at the "Free Software in Higher Education" conference. The conference is organised by the Moscow-based GNU/Linux distributor AltLinux and several universities and research institutes such as the Russian Academy of Science and the Moscow State University.

The conference is one of several that cover the educational use of open source. These meetings are one result of Russia's plans to have open source software installed in all of its schools next year. The conference in the central-Russian city of Pereslavl-Zalessky will take place at the end of a 'Linux Winter School', meant for teachers and instructors, scheduled from 26 to 30 January 2009.

The Armada group is a consortium consisting of three Linux distributors, AltLinux, Linux-online, and Linux-Ink, the manufacturer of the MSVS operating system ("Mobile System of the Armed Forces") and two system integrators (RAMEK and NZIT).

Εδώ θα ήτανε ενδιαφέρων να υπάρχει συμμετοχή και από Ελλάδα , και μετά με άμεσες προτάσεις προς το Υπουργείο Παιδείας .
