I tried getting (latest)skype and "Ubuntu 9.04/i386" and all this "pulse" crap to work but I still had no Mic.
But This quick and dirty DID WORK:
# sudo aptitude search "pulse"
# sudo aptitude purge "pulse"
(remove all the "pulse" driver packages, ...)
# sudo reboot
# In Ubuntu 9.04 -> Sound Properties -> Volume Control
-> enable Mic and adjust vol. accordingly.
(if skype is already installed just "reset" all the audio crap in skype's options back to "autoselect/defaults...", and/or alsa)
or,
# sudo aptitude install skype
Thats it. Skype works perfectly.

you could probably leave the "libpulse0", "gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio", ... client packages and skype will still work. -not sure ?
But note !, obvisouly if you use pulse (as a server,...) extensively then don't remove those.
-For me I don't give a crap !, alsa, oss, ... are more than good enough for me and I need skype.
err atleast until EKIGA get's more popular than skype -now that would be good.

I got solve the issue after mess around so i'm not sure what was the key step to get this sorted anway after remove the pulse as explained above i set this configuration, in skype ->options->sound devices i select all default device, removed the option "allow skype to automatically adjust my mixer levels, then in ubuntu 9.04 system->preference-> sound all autodetect a part from "sound cuptre" where i put hda intel ad198x analog (alsa) and in default mixer tracks "analog devices ad1983 (oss mixer) (i'm using a headphone with microphone plugged in the green and pink connector and not an usb headphone. Then in volume control (in this version of ubuntu you get by clicking on volume icon on the top left corner, and then "volume control") for the device "analog devices ad1983(oss mixer)" in th tab payback i enabled all at maximum level,in tab recording i enabled microphone at maximum level. Then for the device "HDA intel (alsa mixer)" in tab playback all enabled at maximum level, tab switches untick option "line-in Capture" and finally skype microphone was working! smile.png I'm not an expert in linux so as i wrote i dont know what really did the trick and what of modification i did were unnecessary
